Introduction

The passivation process is done by dipping the parts into the acidic bath of metal oxides. It is done for parts made with Steel and its alloys. Passivation enhances appearance and functionality. For a very long time, it keeps the material from rusting.

In essence, it also creates fragile oxide layers of protection on the surface. After Passivation, other finishing processes like painting and polishing are also made easy and effective. Additionally, it treats the parts’ minor surface flaws.

PASSIVATION REVIEW

Identify stainless grade, cleaning condition and verification requirement

Passivation specifications should state the stainless grade, prior machining or welding condition, required cleaning/preparation, treatment route, protected surfaces and the verification evidence expected for the part or batch.

Engineering data to lock before release

Material basisStainless grade, condition and fabrication history
PreparationOil, scale, free-iron or heat-tint removal requirement
Treatment scopeAreas treated, masked interfaces and handling limits
VerificationSpecified test method, visual review or documentation

Passivation should be specified as part of a complete surface-preparation sequence, not as a substitute for choosing an appropriate stainless grade.
