Introduction
The black-oxide finish is a chemical coating technique that covers the surface of metal parts with a smooth, microscopic layer of magnetite (Fe3O4) that ranges in thickness from 0 to 30 micrometer’s. A black-oxide finish minimizes the reflection and resists corrosion.
It is suitable for ferrous materials like copper, zinc, aluminum, chromium, cast iron, cast Steel, Stainless Steel, and others. It is employed in the hardware, automotive, defense, medical, and other industries. The surface turned a deep black color, giving the products an aesthetic appeal.

Define the substrate, protective treatment and appearance expectation
Black oxide is a conversion treatment whose functional outcome depends on the base material, surface preparation and post-treatment such as oil or sealant. State the substrate, coverage, corrosion-protection expectation, masked features and visual acceptance condition.
Engineering data to lock before release
| Base material | Specified steel/alloy and incoming surface state |
|---|---|
| Treatment scope | Faces, threads and areas requiring masking |
| Post-treatment | Oil, sealant or handling condition if required |
| Acceptance | Color/coverage and agreed corrosion or appearance evidence |
Do not equate a black appearance with a defined corrosion performance; specify the required post-treatment and test evidence when performance matters.
